The Avengers/Spiderman Crossover That Almost Was…

Though they’re both Marvel properties and both on the big screen this summer, The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man are controlled by different film studios—so making a true crossover nearly impossible at the moment. But that didn’t stop Marvel from nearly sneaking a Spidey easter egg into the box office juggernaut Avengers.

According to Latino Review, Marvel and Spider-Man film rights holder Sony actually had extensive contact about showing off Oscorp Tower in the new New York skyline inAvengers, but the CG time schedules didn’t match up to make it happen:

“That design overlap, and the stunning look of the Oscorp Tower (seriously stunning) was enough for Marvel Studios and Sony to have the discussion about inserting Oscorp into The Avengers skyline. The Unified Marvel Manhattan Skyline almost existed.By the time the Oscorp building was fully designed, The Avengers digital Manhattan was already basically rendered and there was some up-conversion that needed to go down, so—for timing—it was scrapped.

BUT—Sony and Disney were going to let this happen. THAT’s the key thing here. Timing just didn’t work out.”

Though its still a far cry from letting Spidey join up with The Avengers, it’s at least a step in the right direction to show everybody can play in the same sandbox (or at least adjacent sandboxes) and still give us a few nods to the larger Marvel universe.
